Filling Your Self Storage Unit: What You'll Need

2 Minutes Posted on:

A self-storage unit is a simple way to store items you don't have the space for, but packing everything and getting it into the unit can seem like a daunting task. Fortunately, the right preparation—and the right equipment—can help make the job smaller.

The right boxes

Storing loose items like clothes, books, dishes and ornaments means using lots of packing boxes. You can use either folding cardboard boxes or translucent plastic storage boxes. Cardboard boxes are durable and inexpensive, while plastic boxes are reusable and less vulnerable to moisture. Whichever type of box you use, you'll want a range of different sizes: smaller boxes for heavy items like books and larger boxes for lighter items like clothing. Specialised boxes can be useful for storing particular items. For instance, cardboard wine carriers are a convenient way to store glasses.

Plenty of packing material

Protecting fragile items means keeping them from rattling about in their boxes. You'll want a few different types of packing material to achieve this. Use bubble wrap to wrap individual fragile items like dishes or glasses, then fill the voids in the boxes with loose packing material like foam pellets. Alternatively, you can use some of the things you're packing as padding. For example, you can fill the empty space in a box of books with clothes, towels, or bedding. Older bedding also makes a good cover for vulnerable surfaces like tabletops. If you're using cardboard boxes, you'll also need plenty of packing tape.

Plastic film

A large roll of stretchy plastic film can come in very handy when you're packing items for storage. If you want to make sure that drawers don't slide out from a desk or filing cabinet while you're transporting it, simply wrap the whole unit in plastic film. To prevent a furniture cover from sliding off, wrap it tightly in film. This versatile substance serves as a quick wrapping for all kinds of loose items.

A tool kit

A simple tool kit, including a few screwdrivers, a mallet and a utility knife, will come in handy when you're getting your belongings ready for storage. Use it when taking apart items like bookcases or desks; a tool box with small compartments is also a good place to store the screws and shelf supports that come with these items. When you're done, put the tool box into your self-storage unit and keep it near the door. It may come in handy when it's time to move out or if you need to open a stored box.
