How to Keep Your Furniture in Tip-Top Shape Whilst Placing It in a Storage Unit

If you're planning to put furniture in storage soon, you'll want to make sure the furniture is properly preserved. Read on to learn a few essential tips for making sure that your furniture is in tip top shape when you're ready to retrieve it from furniture storage

Deal With Damage Ahead of Time

Before you place your furniture in storage, you should look it over carefully. If there's any damage, it's best to repair it ahead of time. For example, if your chairs have mould, it must be seen to right away, or the mould is likely to grow whilst the furniture is in storage. Once you've patched the furniture properly, give it a good cleaning. Never put furniture in a storage unit whilst it's dirty, as your cleaning job will be much more difficult after a prolonged period of storage.

Cover With Cushioning

Whether your furniture is made of wood, glass, metal or something else, it still needs a bit of extra cushioning whilst in storage. The primary danger to your furniture is accidental damage or breakage whilst you're placing it inside or moving it out of the storage unit—but you can avoid this by making sure it's well padded. Some storage facilities or moving companies sell specialised furniture pads. If you want to keep costs low, you can use old blankets and quilts around your home. However, don't use grandma's prized quilt, as fabric in a storage unit could potentially be susceptible to mildew if moisture creeps into the unit.

Preserve With Plastic

You can add an extra layer of protection—namely, protection from the elements—if you use heavy-duty plastic wrap in the storage unit. Once you've added the cushioning pads, use the heavy-duty plastic wrap to seal up each piece in a cocoon-like wrap. You'll need heavy-duty packaging tape to make sure the plastic stays in the proper position to protect your furniture. Plastic can help protect your furniture from all manner of environmental damage, from water leak damage to heat damage. The plastic will even deter pests like termites from trying to turn your precious wooden furniture into sawdust whilst you're not there.

With all of the preparation tips discussed above, your furniture will look great both when you leave it and when you retrieve it! It only takes a bit of extra time to look after your furniture the right way so that you'll get the right results!
