Moving house can seem like an intimidating task. There are a lot of different jobs to manage, with moving day getting steadily closer and closer. However, a few simple steps can help to improve your move experience and reduce the stress of moving house.
Start as early as you can
As soon as you have an idea of your move date, begin your planning. Ideally, you should have at least four to six weeks before you move, but this isn't always possible. Whenever you begin, this is the time to start looking for a moving company; the longer you give yourself, the easier it will be to find a mover who is free on the day you need to move and the more able you'll be to compare prices and services. Once you've hired a mover, you'll be able to get started preparing for your move day.
Make a list
The first thing you need to do is make a list of your objectives. In particular, list every service you need to cancel, every agency you need to contact, and every piece of paperwork you need to complete before your move. None of these tasks is too demanding or time-consuming individually, but missing one can cause a real nuisance. Prioritise things that are crucial to your move, such as setting up your new home and contents insurance, notifying the Electoral Office, and updating your licence and car registration.
Get a floor plan
Get a copy of your new home's floor plan if at all possible. You can use this to determine where furniture will go in the new space. It will also play an important role in planning your move as you use it to check whether your larger furniture items will fit through doors. You can use this floor plan to give instructions to your movers about what will go where in your new home.
Do a little every day
Some moving tasks have to wait until shortly before the move itself, but there are many you can do at any time. Try to do a few of these each day. Pack items you aren't going to need during the period before the move, such as books and out-of-season clothes. Even doing a box or two a day can make a big dent in the pile of work that needs to be done. Similarly, contacting one or two of the firms or agencies on your list will cut down on the amount you have to do as the critical day itself approaches. If your moving company is going to be doing the packing for you, you're free to focus on the administration. Work your way through the list a little at a time; you'll get the satisfaction of ticking another item off without the worry of having to do it close to your move date.
